This is my summer time dish for all BBQ's and I always double the recipe. If you enjoy baked beans you have to try this one. It's from a '98 TOH and whenever I make it someone always asks for the recipe. I have personally never made it in the oven since the crock pot does just fine and who wants to heat up the house in the summer? When using the crock pot I will take the lid off for the last hour or so (+/-) of cooking - this will thicken it up if you like your beans thick right at serving. Leftovers freeze very well.

1/2 lb ground beef
5 slices bacon, diced
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 (16 ounce) cans pork and beans, undrained
1 (16 ounce) can butter beans, rinsed and drained
1 (16 ounce) can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup white sugar
1/4 cup catsup
1/4 cup barbecue sauce (I use KC Masterpiece original or hickory)
2 tablespoons molasses
2 tablespoons prepared mustard
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • In a large skillet over med.
  • heat, brown beef, bacon and onion; drain.
  • Add beans.
  • Combine remaining ingredients and stir into bean mixture.
  • Pour into a greased 2 1/2 qt baking dish.
  • Bake uncovered at 350° for 1 hour or until beans reach desired thickness.
  • OR place in greased crock pot and heat on low for 4 hours or so.

1/2 lb bacon, fried, drained and chopped
1/2 lb hamburger, cooked and drained
1 medium onion, chopped
1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, drained
1 (15 ounce) can pork and beans
1 (15 ounce) can butter beans, drained
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
1/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons molasses
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard

Steps:

  • In a large bowl combine cooked bacon, hamburger, onion, kidney beans, pork and beans and butter beans.
  • Mix together brown and white sugar, ketchup, molasses and dry mustard. Combine this mixture with the beans.
  • Bake uncovered for 1 hour at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

1/4 cup molasses

Steps:

  • Chop the onion. In a saucepan heat the oil and then cook the onion until softened. Add the beans and simmer for 10 minutes. Add the molasses and simmer for 10 to 15 more minutes.

6 slices bacon
1 lb ground beef
1 onion, chopped
1 (8 ounce) tomato sauce
1 (15 ounce) diced tomatoes
1/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 (16 ounce) can pork and beans (Phillips)
1 (16 ounce) can mixed beans (pinto and great northern by Bush's)

Steps:

  • Fry bacon until crisp, reserving 2 teaspoons drippings. Crumble and set aside.
  • In a large saucepan saute chopped onion and remove. Brown ground beef and then add onions.
  • Add tomato sauce, diced tomatoes (undrained), ketchup, brown sugar, dry mustard, worcestershire, salt and bacon drippings. Simmer for 1 minute and remove. Lightly stir in beans and crumbled bacon.
  • Pour into a 3 quart baking dish. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 25 minutes.
  • Enjoy!

I've been serving these baked beans for over 20 years at family picnics and barbecues, and never have any left over! Original recipe from The Passion of Barbecue by the Kansas City Barbeque Society - a cookbook I gave to my husband for Christmas when we'd only been married a few years. I've made changes over the years to suit our taste. Feel free to substitute ground beef for the pork sausage if you like.

1/4 lb bacon
1/2 lb bulk breakfast sausage
1 large sweet onion, chopped
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup barbecue sauce
2 teaspoons yellow mustard
1 tablespoon molasses
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 (16 ounce) can butter beans, drained and rinsed
1 (16 ounce) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
1 (31 ounce) can pork and beans, drained. RESERVE sauce to add later as needed

Steps:

  • Brown bacon. Set aside to drain on paper towels.
  • Chop bacon once it has cooled.
  • Crumble and brown the sausage in bacon grease. When brown, use slotted spoon to remove from pan and drain sausage on paper towels.
  • Drain pan of grease, leaving 1 Tablespoon of fat.
  • Add onion to the pan and cook until slightly brown and soft.
  • Transfer meats and onion to a large bowl and add all other ingredients.
  • Add reserved Pork & Bean sauce to achieve desired consistency; often 1/2 half of the reserved sauce is about right.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour.

5 bacon slices
1 green pepper, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 Tbs cider vinegar
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 28oz traditional baked beans
1 can dark red kidney beans*
1 can garbanzo beans*
*can substitute with lima, black or any other bean to suit your preference or what you have on hand.

Steps:

  • Crisp bacon a pot large enough to hold the beans. Remove bacon and drain 1/2 of the drippings. Add green pepper, onion, garlic, vinegar and brown sugar to bacon drippings and sauté 10 minutes. Drain half the liquid from the kidney and garbanzo beans and add them with the baked beans to the onions and pepper. Stir to combine and cook gently for 30 minutes. Crumble bacon and add to beans just before serving.

Savory and sweet! Start with a couple of cans of pork and beans and add Polish sausage, ground beef and bacon to make a quick and easy inexpensive meal. A little brown sugar and molasses adds just the right amound of sweetness. I've also used dark corn syrup when I don't have molasses.
