Ingredients

3 strawberries
1 lime, in slices
1 dash strawberry syrup
2 ounces citrus-infused vodka

Steps:

Crash and shake strawberries and lime slices with strawberry syrup in the bottow of an old-fashioned glass.
Fill it with crushed ice, add vodka and stir to mix well.
Serve with a stick if you have one, and garnish with a strawberry cut in half.

DAWA (AFRICAN COCKTAIL)

Dawa means "medicine" or "magic potion" in Swahili. In other words, a dawa is said to be so potent that it will cure whatever ails you. The recipe is based on a famous Brazilian drink that was introduced to Kenya. It is now one of the most widely consumed cocktails in Kenya and has spread through out North and South Africa (especially in touristy regions). Recipe compiled through different sources while researching African Beverages. Enjoy!

Ingredients

1 teaspoon sugar or 1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 fluid ounces vodka
crushed ice cube
1 whole lime, quarter with skin on
1 dawa stick, twisted in creamed honey

Steps:

Put lime and sugar into a whisky tumbler.
Crush limes slightly, add ice and pour in the vodka.
At this point you twist a dawa stick into some honey and add the stick to the drink. A wooden honey stick or other type of stick twisted in honey will work.
Muddle limes with dawa or honey stick. The more you crush the limes into the mixture and stir the sweeter the taste.

This comes from the book Around the World in 80 Bars, and the recipe comes from "The Carnivore" in Nairobi, Kenya. The Carnivore is a nyama choma (barbecued meat) restaurant, and is licensed to serve gazelle, giraffe, and zebra. In Swahali, Dawa means "somewhere between a medicine and a magic potion'. Traditionally, this drink is served with a small wooden masher so that you can release more lime juice and adjust the flavor of your Dawa to suit your liking. This is a pretty strong tasting drink, so I generally release more lime juice!!

1 lime, quartered and thickly sliced
1 tablespoon honey
1 teaspoon caster sugar
2 ounces vodka
ice, preferably small chips or crushed ice

Steps:

Place the lime slices, honey and sugar in a heavy-based rocks glass and crush lightly together with a spoon.
Add some ice, and pour the vodka over it.
Adjust the flavor by crushing the lime slices further, if desired.
