1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar, divided
1 large egg, room temperature
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375°. Cream butter and 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy; beat in egg and vanilla. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda and cream of tartar; gradually beat into creamed mixture., In a small bowl, mix cinnamon and remaining sugar. Shape dough into 1-in. balls; roll in cinnamon sugar. Place 2 in. apart on ungreased baking sheets., Bake until light brown, 10-12 minutes. Remove from pans to wire racks to cool.

Snickerdoodles gone chocolate! These rich, fudgy, crackly snickerdoodles shimmer with sugar. Perfect for the holidays, but totally appropriate for any time of year.

Number Of Ingredients 9

1/2 cup butter (room temperature (softened)*)
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (divided)
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer affixed with the paddle attachment, or in a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat the the butter and 1 cup sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, 1-2 minutes. Add the egg and the vanilla; mix well.
  • Place a fine-mesh sieve over the bowl and sift in the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and cream of tartar. Beat on low speed just until combined.
  • In a small bowl, stir together 2 tablespoons sugar and cinnamon until combined.
  • Roll dough into approx. 1-inch balls (I use a cookie scoop). Add the balls to the bowl with the cinnamon and sugar and roll until well-covered. Set about 2 inches apart on the baking sheet. Bake until set and lightly browned, about 9 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool on sheet for about 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Cookies keep well at room temperature in an airtight container (3-4 days). They also freeze well.

1 cup shortening
2 eggs
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 3/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda

Steps:

  • Mix together thoroughly the shortening, sugar and eggs.
  • Sift together and stir in flour, cream of tartar, soda and salt. Roll into balls the size of small walnuts.
  • Roll in mixture of 2 tablespoons sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon.
  • Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 8 to 10 minutes in medium to hot (400 degrees) oven until lightly brown but still soft. These cookies puff up at first, then flatten out with crinkled tops.

200g unsalted butter, softened
150g caster sugar
50g light brown soft sugar
2 tsp vanilla bean paste
300g plain flour
1½ tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
3 tbsp milk
3 tbsp caster sugar
1 tbsp ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6, and line a baking tray with baking parchment. Beat the butter and both sugars in a large bowl using an electric whisk for 2 mins until smooth and fluffy.
  • Add the vanilla and beat until combined, scraping down the sides once. Add the flour, cream of tartar, bicarbonate of soda and ¼ tsp salt, and mix until just combined. Stir in the milk to loosen the mixture.
  • For the topping, combine the sugar and cinnamon in a shallow bowl. Roll 40g of the dough into a ball. Roll the dough ball in the cinnamon-sugar mixture, then place it on the prepared tray and press it down lightly. Repeat with the remaining dough and topping, spacing the balls about 5cm apart.
  • Bake for 10-12 mins until golden and puffed up. Leave to cool on the tray for 5 mins, then transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely. Will keep in an airtight tin for up to four days.

1 cup shortening
1 ½ cups white sugar
2 eggs
2 ¾ cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
¼ teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons white sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  • In a large bowl, mix together the shortening and 1 1/2 cups of white sugar until smooth. Stir in the eggs one at a time, blending well after each. Combine the flour, baking soda, cream of tartar and salt; stir into the batter until blended.
  • Roll the dough into balls the size of small walnuts. Roll in a mixture of 2 tablespoons sugar and 2 teaspoons cinnamon. Place 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned, but still soft.

2 teaspoons cream of tartar

Steps:

  • Mix the cinnamon with the sugar in a bowl and set aside.
  • Mix the margarine, sugar and eggs.
  • Add the dry ingredients and form small balls.
  • Roll the balls in the cinnamon/sugar mixture.
  • Place on a cookie sheet 5 centimeters apart (they spread as they bake).
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes at 190 degrees Celsius (375 F).
  • Remove from the tray immediately.
