Indian Yellow Split Pea Dal image

This easy recipe is for a basic vegetarian and vegan yellow split-pea dal, a staple of Indian cooking. Enjoy the spice explosion from turmeric to cumin.

Time 50m

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 cup yellow split peas (uncooked)
2 cups water (or vegetable broth )
1 teaspoon turmeric
1/4 teaspoon cayenne
1/2 teaspoon salt (plus more to taste)
1 tablespoon margarine
1 onion (diced)
1 1/2 teaspoon cumin (whole seeds or ground)
2 whole cloves
Dash pepper (to taste)

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • In a large pot, combine the uncooked yellow split peas and the water or vegetable broth. Bring to a slow simmer.
  • Add the turmeric , cayenne, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and cover.
  • Cook for at least 20 minutes, covered, until the yellow split peas are fully cooked, stirring occasionally. If you prefer a smoother texture, continue to cook the dal for an additional 10 to 15 minutes to allow the yellow split peas to break up even more.
  • Once the split peas are almost done, in a separate large skillet or frying pan, heat the onion, cumin, and clove in the margarine. Cook for 4 to 6 minutes, or until the onion is soft.
  • Add the spiced onion mixture to the split peas, and allow to simmer for at least 5 more minutes.
  • Add a dash of pepper and more salt, if desired, and serve hot with rice or alone in a soup bowl. Enjoy!

SAUERKRAUT & YELLOW SPLIT PEAS RECIPE - (3.6/5)

Sauerkraut & Yellow Split Peas Recipe - (3.6/5) image

Provided by dorchuk

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 32 oz jar or can of Franks sauerkraut
1/2 of 1 lb pkg of yellow split peas (approx. 1/1/4 cup)
1/2 lb of bacon (12 slices)
1 medium onion, chopped
Black pepper
Salt (optional)

Steps:

  • #1 Pot: Rinse and Cover split peas with 3 cups of cold water. Bring to boil and simmer for approx 30 min. until mushy. May need to add more water and stir so peas do not stick to pot. Mash as desired with fork or potato masher. No need to drain; water should cook down. #2 larger pot: Drain sauerkraut (Save juice). I do not rinse kraut. Cover with 3 or 4 cups of cold water. Bring to boil and simmer approx 30 minutes Drain and return to pot. #3 Fry pan: Fry bacon until crisp. When cooked, pour clear drippings into a small bowl. Should have approx 1/3 cup drippings. Wipe fry pan and pour in clear drippings and chopped onion. Cook slowly until onion is soft Crumble 2-3 slices cooked bacon to put in kraut mixture later. Use leftover bacon as you wish. Combine in larger pot: Cooked split peas, warmed and drained kraut, cooked onion and dripping mixture and crumbled bacon. Keep stirring. Add black pepper and none or whatever amount of saved kraut juice to taste. Stir well. I never add salt. Cover and refrigerate. Can substitute margarine for bacon drippings. Can double recipe. I cook this recipe a day ahead so flavors blend well. Rewarm slowly on top of stove.

CANADIAN YELLOW SPLIT PEA SOUP WITH HAM

Canadian Yellow Split Pea Soup with Ham image

Creamy yellow pea soup studded with bits of ham, carrots, celery, and thyme. There is nothing like this one on a cold day! I am a Canadian now living in the US. and cannot get Habitant® soup anymore, so I came up with this version. I think it is as good as the real thing, if not better, because it is homemade.

Time 3h50m

Yield 12

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 ½ cups yellow split peas
1 ham bone with some meat
4 carrots, diced
½ large Spanish onion, diced
5 stalks celery, diced
2 teaspoons dried thyme
1 bay leaf
2 tablespoons kosher salt
1 pinch ground black pepper, or to taste
8 cups water, or as needed

Steps:

  • Place split peas, ham bone, carrots, onion, celery, thyme, bay leaf, salt, and pepper into a large pot; pour in water. Bring mixture to a boil and skim off any foam with a spoon. Reduce heat; place a lid on the pot slightly ajar to allow some evaporation. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until peas are tender and soup is thick, about 3 hours.
  • Remove ham bone from soup; strip meat from ham bone, chop meat, and return it to the pot.
