Steps:
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat; sauté ground beef with onions until beef is browned and onions are tender.
- Pour off excess fat, and add remaining ingredients.
- Pour into a 1 1/2-quart casserole dish, and bake at 350°F for 30 minutes.

Steps:
- Heat oil in Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Cook beef and onion in oil about 15 minutes, stirring frequently, until beef is brown.
- Stir in broth, wine, thyme, pepper and bay leaf. Heat to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until beef is almost tender.
- Stir in beans, carrots and celery. Cover and simmer about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are tender. Remove bay leaf. Sprinkle with parsley and bacon.

- In a large skillet, cook beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in the rice, beans, cheese and water. Cook and stir over medium-low heat until cheese is melted.

BEEFY BARBECUE BAKED BEANS
Steps:
- Heat the oven to 375 F (190 C/Gas 5).
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. When the oil is hot add the ground beef, onions, green bell pepper, and celery. Cook, stirring frequently until the beef is browned and vegetables are tender. Add the tomato sauce, water, garlic, vinegar, mustard, thyme, and brown sugar. Blend well and then simmer for 5 minutes. Taste and add salt and pepper as needed.
- Pour the canned pork and beans into a 2-quart casserole; add the ground beef mixture and stir gently to blend.

- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add mushrooms, onion, and garlic; cook until onions start to look soft and translucent, 5 to 10 minutes.
- Cut a couple of slits in the green bean bag and microwave on high power until beans are a bit defrosted, 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from the microwave and pour the beans into the skillet.
- Crumble bouillon cube into the skillet and mix everything together. Turn the temperature down a bit and let the mixture cook for 10 to 15 minutes. Pour in water and mix until any remaining bouillon has dissolved. Cover and steam, stirring occasionally, until beans are tender and as crunchy or limp as you like them; you will need to taste them to determine when they are done.
- Remove the lid and increase temperature to high to cook off any remaining liquid. Serve immediately.

SAUCY BAKED BEANS
Basically traditional Boston baked beans, but uses bacon rather than salt pork, and orange peel and raisins add a zippy surprise. The preparation time doesn't include pre-soaking the beans overnight. I like to serve this with Boston Brown bread (see my recipe #90592), as is customary.

- In a large bowl, cover the beans with water to 2 inches above the top of the beans; soak overnight and drain.
- Sautè the bacon with the onion until the bacon is crisp and the onion is tender.
- Add the bacon and onion and any pan juices to the beans.
- Combine the bean mixture with 10 cups water plus the maple sugar through the orange peel.
- Place in a 3½ quart or larger bean pot or casserole dish, or in two smaller pots.
- Simmer in preheated oven at 250° 5-6 hrs or until the beans are tender.
