SAUCE ESSENTIALS: LEMON BUTTERMILK DIPPING SAUCE



Sauce Essentials: Lemon Buttermilk Dipping Sauce image

This is one of my favorite recipes for serving with breaded chicken tenders, or breaded fish. It has a tang that hits your taste buds like a hammer... It is's very easy to assemble, and if you can let it sit in the fridge overnight, you won't be disappointed. So, you ready... Let's get into the kitchen.

Number Of Ingredients 8

1/2 c fresh buttermilk
1/2 c fresh mayonnaise
1 large lemon, both the zest and the juice
1 Tbsp fresh dill, chopped
1/4 tsp garlic salt
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp white pepper, freshly ground
salt, kosher variety, to taste

Steps:

  • 1. PREP/PREPARE
  • 2. Gather your Ingredients (mise en place).
  • 3. Add all the ingredients to a large mixing bowl.
  • 4. Use a whisk to thoroughly combine the ingredients.
  • 5. Chef's Note: At this time, add a bit of salt, to taste.
  • 6. Place into a tightly-sealed, non-reactive container, and stick into the fridge overnight. Assuming you can wait that long.
  • 7. Chef's Note: After an evening in the fridge, it will thicken up a bit, and make for a perfect sauce for dipping.
  • 8. PLATE/PRESENT
  • 9. Use as a dipping sauce for chicken, fish, or some fresh veggies. Enjoy.
  • 10. Keep the faith, and keep cooking.

This is similar to a typical ranch dressing, but I tweaked the ingredients to help it better compliment items such as, chicken wings and veggies. I wanted it ranch-like; however, I wanted to be able to taste the item I was dipping into it. I made this the other day while pulling an all-nighter working on my slow-cooker chicken...

PLAN/PURCHASE
WET INGREDIENTS
1/4 c buttermilk
1/3 c greek yogurt, plain variety, or sour cream
1/2 c mayonnaise, plain variety
DRY INGREDIENTS
1 tsp dill weed, dried, or fresh
1 tsp dehydrated onions, ground to a powder
1/4 tsp dried parsley
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp dried chives
1/8 tsp salt, kosher variety, fine grind
1 - 2 pinch white pepper, fine grind
ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS
1 - 2 tsp lemon juice, freshly squeezed, or to taste
OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS
1 Tbsp buttermilk powder

Steps:

  • 1. PREP/PREPARE
  • 2. This dressing will last 8 - 10 days, if kept in a container with a tight-fitting lid, and refrigerated.
  • 3. Buttermilk Powder The buttermilk powder is optional; however, it adds a pleasing tang to the dip. If you do not have any, no worries. However, if you have some, you might want to give it a try.
  • 4. Gather your ingredients (mise en place).
  • 5. WET INGREDIENTS
  • 6. Starting with the wet ingredients, whisk them together until incorporated and smooth.
  • 7. DRY INGREDIENTS
  • 8. Add all of the dry ingredients and whisk until fully incorporated.
  • 9. ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS
  • 10. Add the lemon juice, a bit at a time until you like what you taste.
  • 11. Let it sit in the fridge for a couple of hours, or overnight, to thicken, and give the dry ingredients a chance to meld with the wet ones.
  • 12. PLATE/PRESENT
  • 13. Serve as a dipping sauce with things like chicken wings or tenders; in addition, it goes great as a dip for veggies. Enjoy.
  • 14. Keep the faith, and keep cooking.
