Web Jun 21, 2015 #1 I bought a Leblond lathe and would like to change the oil in the head. The placard calls for 20w - 20 motor oil. I am finding it difficult to find locally and the oil I find online is a bit expensive. The lathe is a 1976, I am wondering if oil technology has changed and there is a better oil to use now and possibly more readily available.

STRAIGHT-WEIGHT 20 OIL | BOB IS THE OIL GUY
Web Apr 27, 2018 SAE viscosity grades are not optional ... the oil is rated for what it tests at, no more, no less. So an SAE 20 that grades at 10W either wasn't graded for W by the blender or it's a 20 at winter temps, not a 10W. Some "straight weight" oils are tested for W and that's where you will see a 20W20 grade (for example).

SAE 20 OIL EQUIVALENT - THE BUZZING FORUM - TAPATALK
Web 61 regular May 21, 2013 #5 OK, don't use that fork oil or that gear oil. You want detergent-free (non-detergent) SAE 20 motor oil, like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Classic-Marin ... 3a812af0e5 The only alternative that I would suggest would be SAE 30 detergent-free motor oil, which is sometimes easier to find in smaller containers. paulwitchard

HISTORY LESSON- 20W-20 MOTOR OIL | BOB IS THE OIL GUY
Web Jul 31, 2005 The SAE 20 grade did (does) not require any type of cold temp rating. Today, a 20W rated oil, 9500 cP @ -15C, is the equivalent of a 4250 cP requirement at -10C, the temp from the 1997 revised SAE J300 chart. So today, a 20W-20 at -10C/14F is the viscosity equivalent of a very good 5W-30 rating of 4250 at -30C/-22F.
