Time 10m

Yield 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

3 cups flour
1 1/2 cups salt
3 cups water
2 tablespoons cooking oil
1 tablespoon cream of tartar
3 drops food coloring

Steps:

  • Blend all the ingredients together in a saucepan. Cook the mixture slowly (here's where an adult should help), stirring constantly in til the clay pulls away from the side of the pan and you can no longer move the spoon.
  • Remove the mixture from the pan and, after it cools a bit, knead it until it becomes smooth and pliable.
  • Store in a zip lock bag or tightly sealed container to keep it fresh. If for some reason it does dry out a little, add a few drops of oil and water then knead it again to make it as good as new.

PLAY CLAY

Play Clay image

This is a modeling dough for children that can also be used to make Christmas ornaments. I found this one in a newpaper. I haven't tried it but it looks like one that my daughter brought home and made when she was in school. After hers were hardened she got paint, glue and a variety of coloured glitter and decorated them.

Time 2h25m

Yield 1 batch

Number Of Ingredients 5

1/2 cup table salt (do not use rock or sea salt)
1/2 cup hot water
1/2 cup cold water
1/2 cup cornstarch
2 drops food coloring (optional)

Steps:

  • Mix the cold water, food coloring (if desired) and the cornstarch until smooth Mix the salt and the hot water in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  • Add the cornstarch mixture to the boiling salt water and stir vigorously to prevent it from lumping up.

  • Turn the mixture out onto a bread board.
  • When cool knead until smooth.
  • Use immediately or wrap in plastic wrap and store in an airtight container.

MAGICAL MODELING CLAY

Magical Modeling Clay image

This is another "clay" recipe from the Savanah Food Company. It is delicate enough to pinch to a paper-thin level and yet sturdy enough to hold its shape. It can be colored in advance with food coloring or bright acrylic paints, yet it can be left in its original white state and painted later. It can be coated with polyurethane or left with a natural bisque finish. Times listed are a guestimate. You'll need ssorted paints, ribbons and pipe cleaners for hanging and decorating.

Categories     Low Protein

Time P3DT30m

Yield 1/2 pound

Number Of Ingredients 2

8 -10 slices white bread
1 (4 ounce) bottle of white all-purpose glue

Steps:

  • Trim the crust away from the bread.
  • Pinch the bread into very small pieces.
  • Slowly pour the glue into the bread pieces and mix by hand until a dough has formed.
  • Package the dough in a plastic bag or airtight container and refrigerate overnight to "ripen.".
  • Lightly coat your hands with vegetable oil if dough is not too sticky to handle.
  • Knead the ripened dough until smooth and pliable.
  • Divide dough and color with food coloring or acrylic paints if desired.
  • The addition of the liquid in the form of coloring will cause the dough to become a little sticky again, but just keep on working the dough - it will regain its manageable state.
  • Model dough into desired shapes and insert twisted pipe cleaners into the backs of your figures for hanging or simply form a hole with a toothpick.
  • Air dry on wax paper.
  • It will take from 1 to 3 days, depending on the thickness of your ornament.
  • Can also roll and cut this clay.
  • Keep in airtight container in refrigerator.

EASY MODELLING CLAY

Easy Modelling Clay image

I found this recipe on a website called squiglysplayhouse.com while I was trying to help my kids with a school project. We were trying to create a medieval church. It is a simple recipe that takes very little time and costs a lot less to make than buying modelling clay.

Provided by Kate in Ontario

Number Of Ingredients 4

3/4 cup water
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 1/4 cups flour
1 1/4 cups table salt

  • Mix all ingredients together until you have a soft ball of dough-if too dry add a bit of water.
  • Sprinkle some flour on counter and knead it until smooth and stretchy.
  • Shape the dough any way you want-use a toothpick or straw for making holes.
  • When finished shaping, put on cookie sheet and bake 20 minutes or until hard-timing depends on size of your piece of art.
  • Place on wire rack to cool.
  • Once cool, you can paint them.
  • When paint is dry a clear varnish can be added to give your creation a wonderful shine.
