Honey Sesame Instant Pot Chicken Thighs are super easy, tender, and flavorful making for one of the best instant pot chicken recipes ever! This chicken is smothered in a sweet and savory honey sesame garlic sauce that is out of this world and perfect over rice!

2 Pounds Chicken Thighs
Salt & Pepper to taste
1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
1/4 Cup Chicken Broth
2 Teaspoons Sesame Oil (Divided)
2 Cloves Garlic (Minced)
1/2 Cup Soy Sauce
1/3 Cup Honey
2 Tablespoons Ketchup
1/4 Teaspoon Red Pepper Flakes (optional)
1/2 Cup Water
2 Tablespoons Cornstarch
2 Tablespoons Cold Water
Sesame Seeds
Green Onion, (Chopped)
Rice, (For Serving)

Steps:

  • Season the chicken thighs on both sides with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Add the olive oil and 1 teaspoon of the sesame oil to the instant pot and turn to saute.
  • When the oil is hot, add the seasoned chicken thighs and sear for 2-3 minutes until golden brown on each side.
  • Remove the chicken thighs from the pot to a plate. Pour the chicken broth into the pot and use a wooden spoon to scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot.
  • Turn the instant pot to off.
  • In a medium bowl whisk together the remaining teaspoon of sesame oil, minced garlic, soy sauce, honey, ketchup, red pepper flakes, and water.
  • Return the chicken thighs to the pot. Pour the sauce over the chicken thighs.
  • Seal the pot and cook on manual for 8 minutes for boneless chicken thighs or 10 minutes for bone-in chicken thighs. Once the cook time is up, do a quick pressure release.
  • Remove chicken from the pot to a plate and cover with foil if desired to keep warm.
  • In a small bowl whisk together the cornstarch and water.
  • Turn the instant pot to saute and add the cornstarch slurry to the sauce with a whisk. When the sauce is thick, turn off the pot and serve the sauce over the chicken.

1 tablespoon sesame oil
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup soy sauce or gluten-free tamari soy sauce
1/4 cup water
3 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
3 teaspoons cornstarch
2 tablespoons cold water
1 tablespoon sesame seeds
Hot cooked rice
Thinly sliced green onions, optional

Steps:

  • Select saute or browning setting on a 6-qt. electric pressure cooker. Adjust for medium heat; add sesame oil. When oil is hot, brown chicken in batches. Press cancel. Return all to pressure cooker. In a small bowl, whisk honey, soy sauce, water, garlic and pepper flakes; stir into pressure cooker. Lock lid; close pressure-release valve. Adjust to pressure-cook on high for 4 minutes. , Quick-release pressure. In a small bowl, mix cornstarch and water until smooth; stir into pressure cooker. Select saute setting and adjust for low heat. Simmer, stirring constantly, until thickened, 1-2 minutes. Serve with rice. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and, if desired, green onions.

Steps:

  • Salt and pepper chicken. Preheat pressure cooking pot. Add oil, onion, garlic, and chicken to the pot and cook stirring occasionally until onion is softened, about 3 minutes. Add soy sauce, ketchup, and red pepper flakes to the pressure cooking pot and stir to combine. Pressure cook on high for 3 minutes. When timer beeps, turn pressure cooker off and do a quick pressure release. Add honey to the pot and stir to combine. In a small bowl, dissolve cornstarch in water and add to the pot. 1 tablespoon Sriracha sauce

½ cup cold water
1 tablespoon cornstarch

¾ teaspoon garlic powder, divided
1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 egg
¾ cup all-purpose flour
½ cup cold water

Steps:

  • Mix honey, tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, Sriracha sauce, and sesame oil together in a medium bowl.
  • Combine cold water, cornstarch, and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a bowl; mix well. Add to honey sauce mixture and mix well. Set aside until needed.
  • Sprinkle 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder over chicken.
  • Whisk egg in a large bowl. Add remaining salt and garlic powder and mix well. Mix in flour. Combine water and cornstarch in a bowl; add to egg mixture and mix well. Add avocado oil and baking powder; mix well.
  • Pour 3 inches of peanut oil into the bottom of a wide, deep pot and heat to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
  • Place 1/2 of the chicken pieces into the batter mixture and turn to coat. Scoop tablespoonfuls of chicken and batter into the hot oil. Do not crowd the chicken. Fry in batches until chicken pieces are golden brown and no longer pink in the centers, about 1 minute per side. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate. Check oil temperature between batches.
  • Pour honey sauce mixture into a large skillet. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, 3 to 4 minutes. Add all chicken pieces to the sauce; turn to coat. Sprinkle on sesame seeds.

1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon sesame seeds
1 tablespoon sliced green onions, or to taste

Steps:

  • Whisk honey, soy sauce, water, garlic, and red pepper flakes together in a small bowl; set aside.
  • Turn on a multi-functional pressure cooker (such as Instant Pot®) and select Saute function. Adjust for medium heat and add sesame oil. Cook chicken in batches in the hot oil, stirring occasionally, until browned, 3 to 5 minutes.
  • Return all chicken to the pot and stir in honey-soy mixture. Close and lock the lid. Select high pressure according to manufacturer's instructions; set timer for 4 minutes. Allow 10 to 15 minutes for pressure to build.
  • Release pressure carefully using the quick-release method according to manufacturer's instructions, about 5 minutes. Unlock and remove the lid.
