This recipe is my own adaptation of a recipe that came from my husband's grandmother. I made a few changes to suit my own family's tastes. These cookies are a big hit with kids as well as adults.

1 cup white sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup shortening
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
2 cups quick cooking oats
2 cups orange-flavored fruit slice jelly candies

Steps:

  • In large mixing bowl, cream together sugars and shortening till fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla; beat well. Stir together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir into creamed mixture.
  • Stir in the oats, and the orange candy. NOTE: Dip a pair of kitchen shears into a glass of hot water or spray with a non-stick spray to make snipping the orange slices easier. Using about one tablespoon of mixture for each cookie, roll into one inch balls. Place on greased cookie sheets.
  • Bake in a 350 degree F (175 degrees C) oven for 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove and cool on a wire rack.

1 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
2 large eggs, separated, room temperature
1 cup buttermilk
5 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
Pinch salt
Juice and grated zest of 2 medium navel oranges
ICING:
2 cups confectioners' sugar
1/4 cup orange juice
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon grated orange zest

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325°. In a bowl, cream shortening and sugar. Beat in egg yolks and buttermilk. Sift together flour, baking powder, soda and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with orange juice and zest. Add egg whites and beat until smooth. , Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheets. Bake until set, about 10 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool completely., For icing, combine all ingredients and beat until smooth. Frost cooled cookies.

"I remember my dad making a big batch of these citrus cookies when I was growing up," writes Tammie Young from Mattoon, Illinois. "They're very moist and have a wonderful old-fashioned taste."

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 medium navel oranges
1/2 cup butter-flavored shortening
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup milk
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2-1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
1 tablespoon butter, melted

Steps:

  • With a sharp knife, score each orange into quarters; remove peel. Use knife to remove white pith from peel and fruit; discard. Quarter oranges and place in a blender. Add peel; cover and process until smooth (mixture should measure 3/4 cup)., In a large bowl, cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in milk and 6 tablespoons orange mixture. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture until blended. , Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls 2 in. apart onto greased baking sheets. Bake at 350° for 10-13 minutes or until set and edges are lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool., For frosting, in a small bowl, combine confectioners' sugar, butter and enough of the remaining orange mixture to achieve spreading consistency. Frost cookies.

  • Using an electric mixer on medium speed, cream together the butter and the orange zest-infused sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add the egg and orange and mix until combined, scraping the sides of the bowl as needed. Reduce the mixer speed to low and gradually add the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. If the dough seems a little on the soft side, refrigerate it for up to 30 minutes.
