Our grandfather always made this for us when we came to visit during Christmas time. This is a great dish to make when it is cold outside and will warm your soul. It is quick and easy to make.

3 cups milk
⅓ cup white sugar
1 ½ tablespoons vanilla extract
6 slices white bread, toasted
3 pinches ground cinnamon, or to taste

Steps:

  • Combine milk, sugar, and vanilla extract in a medium saucepan over medium heat; bring to a boil.
  • Divide milk evenly into 3 bowls. Tear toast into bite-sized pieces and distribute evenly amongst bowls. Sprinkle with cinnamon.

Milk toast has made a comeback recently, and while it is still an easy and nutritious breakfast, it doesn't have to be bland or boring.

2 thick slices day-old brioche bread
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1 teaspoon granulated sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 cups whole milk

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • Toast the day-old brioche bread in the toaster. Softer bread can be toasted longer so it can hold up to the milk in the bowl. Firmer bread can be lightly toasted.
  • Generously butter each slice.
  • Using a serrated knife, cut the toasted bread into bite-sized cubes.
  • In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar and cinnamon. Set aside.
  • In a small saucepan, warm the milk just to simmering.
  • Place the toasted bread cubes in a bowl and top with the warmed milk. Sprinkle with the desired amount of cinnamon sugar. Enjoy immediately as you would a bowl of cereal.

R&M'S MILK TOAST

This is very good. It is sort of like French toast but without eggs, and has a milky flavor inside.

¾ cup whole milk
2 tablespoons brown sugar
3 slices white bread
1 tablespoon maple syrup, or to taste

Steps:

  • Stir together milk and sugar in a saucepan until well combined. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, being careful that the milk doesn't burn.
  • Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. Soak bread in the sweetened milk.
  • Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and quickly brown the soaked bread on both sides. Serve hot with maple syrup.

If you're not feeling 100% and would like something simple to eat, this may be just what the doctor ordered. My husband had this when he was growing up and didn't feel well...(I'd be tempted to use sugar instead of the salt, and raisins could be optional...)

butter
4 slices white bread or 4 slices whole wheat bread, toasted
2 cups milk
1/4 cup raisins (optional)
1/4 teaspoon salt (or sugar!)
cinnamon, if desired

Steps:

  • Butter the toast and place in two soup bowls.
  • Heat the milk with the raisins and salt.
  • Simmer for a minute or two, till the raisins plump.
  • Pour half the milk mixture over each serving.
  • Sprinkle with cinnamon, if desired.

NONNIE'S MILK TOAST

It's a sweet treat. It sounded icky to me as a child but I skeptically tasted it and it's like cake. Wonderfully quick and easy and great when one wants a single serving of a sweet treat. My mother served this to me a few times as a child. I know she got the recipe from her mother. Both have passed away and I post this recipe in honor of those hard working women.

Steps:

  • Pour milk into a saucepan and bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly. Once milk boils, remove from heat.
  • Toast bread and place each slice in its own bowl, large enough so the bread can lay flat. Sprinkle toast with sugar and pour warm milk over the bread. Serve.
