Cut out fabric according to these pillowcase measurements. For the standard size pillowcase, start by cutting out a rectangular piece 27″ x 43″ big, from the main fabric.
Prepare the cuff and trim. Fold the trim fabric piece lengthwise and press it flat with your iron. Place the cuff fabric piece on your workspace with its right side facing up.
Layer all fabrics. Place your main fabric over the two pieces so that its right side is facing inward. Make sure that the long edges are on the top and the bottom.
Roll it up (burrito method) Start rolling up the main fabric from the bottom towards the top. Stop about an inch away from the top edge. Grab the bottom edge of the cuff fabric that’s below the rolled-up main fabric.
Start sewing the burrito style pillow case. Sew along the top long edge with a quarter-inch seam allowance. Backstitch at the beginning and the end of the seam to reinforce it.
Turn right side out and press. Turn the whole thing inside-out, unfold it, and press everything flat with your iron.
(OPTIONAL) Top-stitching or embroidery. If you want, you can topstitch the edge to give it a finer finish. Also, if you like to add some embroidery to your pillowcases, feel free to do so in this step.
Start sewing French seams. Fold the pillowcase so that its short sides align with the WRONG sides together (that’s right, wrong sides together)!
Turn and press. Turn the entire pillowcase wrong side out. Press everything flat with an iron. For best results, roll the seam with your fingers to push it to the edge before you press it flat.
Finish the french seam. Sew along the seamed edge with a quarter-inch seam allowance, backstitching at the beginning and the end. This will completely enclose the seam you’ve just sewn.

Layer Your Materials. Place your cuff fabric on your work station, right side up. Layer the main pillowcase fabric on top of it, right side up, aligning the top raw edges.
Roll Up the Main Fabric. Starting at the bottom and working your way up, roll the main fabric panel into a little tube or “burrito.” Stop when you get to the center of the cuff fabric.
Fold Up the Cuff Fabric. Bring the bottom edge of the cuff fabric up and over the burrito. Align the raw edges. Pin in place, making sure to trap the accent strip.
Sew the Raw Edges. Stitch along the raw edges with a ¼” seam allowance, or use a serger to finish the edge. It should now look like a long fabric burrito.
Unroll and Press. Tug at the main fabric inside the burrito, gently pulling it out of the tube. Continue pulling your pillowcase from the inside out. Once it’s fully unrolled, lay flat and press the wrinkles out, making sure the accent strip lays flat and in the same direction.
Trim to Size. Trim the pillowcase to 28” long, measuring from the top of the cuff to the opposite end. Then, fold the pillowcase in half, right sides together.
Finish the Pillowcase. There are a few ways you can finish this pillow case: Serger: Fold the pillowcase in half, then serge the raw edges on the top and right sides only.
Trap the Raw Edges. Turn the pillowcase wrong side out; gently poke the corners. Press. Sew a ⅜” seam (or ½” if you prefer) on the same two sides you sewed in step 7.
Turn and Press. Flip the pillowcase right side out; gently poke the corners. Give it one last press and you have a pillowcase that’s ready to be filled!
