2 dried chilies, remove seeds
1 cup water or vegetable stock
1/2 cup yellow onion, minced
1 carrot, minced
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 tablespoon white wine vinegar
1 tablespoon cumin
2 teaspoons molasses
2 teaspoons black pepper
2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1/2 teaspoon mustard powder

Steps:

  • Place a saucepan over medium heat. Add the chilies and water or vegetable stock. Simmer until the chilies become soft, about 10 to 15 minutes. Remove the chilies from the heat. Transfer the chili mixture into a blender. Add in all the remaining ingredients and blend until smooth.

I love using hot sauce in chiliguaro, a Costa Rican firewater shot. It's refreshing and spicy, so it's great for the daytime!

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 cups tomato juice
2/3 cup guaro or white rum
2/3 cup fresh lime juice, plus lime wedges for garnish
1 1/2 tablespoons Salsa Lizano
1 teaspoon habanero hot sauce
2 tablespoons chopped onion
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper

Steps:

  • Combine the tomato juice, guaro, lime juice, Salsa Lizano, hot sauce, onion and cilantro in a blender. Add 1 to 1 1/2 teaspoons salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper and puree until smooth. Pour into a container and refrigerate until ready to serve.
  • To serve, vigorously shake or stir some of the tomato juice mixture in a shaker with ice until very cold. Strain into 2-ounce shot glasses and garnish with lime wedges.
