5 KNITTING EDGES YOU SHOULD KNOW! | CRAFTSY

Estimated Reading Time 3 mins
  • Ribs. Ribbing is likely the first edge pattern you learned. The reason ribbing is so prevalent in patterns is that it lays flat, is pretty stretchy, and the pattern repeats are easily memorized.
  • Picots. Picots are a more decorative stitch type. There are a few different ways to achieve gorgeous picots, but the most common is a folded picot hem.
  • I-Cord. The i-cord edge is one of my favorites along the sides of stitches. It works best if your knit fabric is already laying flat. Try making your i-cord edge in a contrasting color for a more interesting look!
  • Stockinette stitch hems. A stockinette stitch hem is the way to go if you are looking for an understated, yet polished look. It is a strong edge that is perfect for sleeves or collars.
  • Ruffles. A ruffled edge is a classy yet playful look. You can use it as a blanket edge, on leg warmers, socks, or even hats. It’s a very simple technique that you can apply at cast-on or bind-off.

KNITTING NEAT EDGES AS YOU GO | DON'T BE SUCH A SQUARE

From dontbesuchasquare.com
  • Tighten up your edge stitches. If you don’t want to go for anything fancy and don’t want to make things harder this is a tip for you! Maybe you just knitting your first project ever.
  • Slipped stitches add clean edges to your knitting. The easiest and maybe most common one is to add two selvage stitches when casting on.
  • Add garter stitch edges. Add eight selvage stitches, four on each side, and knit these four first and last stitches on every row. This will add neat edges of garter stitch to your knitting.
  • Faux hemline with double stockinette. This edge is barely visible from the right side, from the wrong side it looks like a hemline. In other words, this edge that is super easy to add as you go looks like you have spent a lot of time on hemming the sides of the garment.
  • Add i-cords as you knit. Adding an i-cord edging doesn’t have to be hard at all! You add it to the sides of your project directly instead of picking up stitches and doing it afterward.

THE 10 BEST EDGE STITCH KNITTING TECHNIQUES - NIMBLE …

  • Chain Stitch selvage. This is by far the most versatile and easiest selvage stitch. You will find it in my small variations and under different names.
  • Twisted slip stitch selvage. A simple twist (excuse the pun) of the classic chain stitch selvage is the twisted slip stitch selvage. Here, the legs of the edge stitches cross.
  • Garter stitch selvage (also knotted or beaded selvage) This is probably the most versatile edge ever. It’s super easy to remember, it works for almost all projects and it will even help a bit against the curling of stockinette stitch.
  • Double or Triple Garter stitch selvage. This is the easiest selvage option if you want to keep your stockinette stitch from curling. It adds quite a decorative border that lays perfectly flat.
  • Double twist selvage. If you are seeking a firm edge that creates one stitch for every two rows, then look no further. The double twist selvage is probably your best choice in these cases.
