3 quarts unsweetened apple juice or cider
1 quart cranberry juice
2 to 3 whole cloves
1 cinnamon sticks (3-1/2 inches)

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients in a large kettle; bring to a boil. Boil for 5 minutes. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove cloves and cinnamon stick. Serve warm.

  • Bring to boil, then simmer 10 minutes.
  • Remove from heat & stir in rum, honey & butter, until butter is melted.
  • Ladle into heated mugs & serve.

1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup honey
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
EACH SERVING:
3/4 cup hot apple cider or juice
1 ounce apple brandy, optional

Steps:

  • Beat butter and brown sugar until blended; beat in honey and spices. Transfer to an airtight container. Store in refrigerator up to 2 weeks.To prepare hot cider: Place 1-1/2 teaspoons buttered cider mix in a mug. Stir in hot cider and, if desired, brandy.

I was tired of making the same cloyingly sweet apple cider, so I decided to try this one off allrecipes.com, and, boy, am I ever glad I did! This cider has the perfect mix of tart and sweet and spicy, and it's so easy, too. You can even substitute ground cinnamon for the cinnamon sticks if you want. We did, and the cider still turned out fantastic.
