Hard to start. The carburetor might be clogged. The problem with starting is the most common problem of all. And there are a bunch of causes behind it. That is why you will not be able to tell the reason for the problem just by seeing the result of the problem.
Smoke coming out. When you see smoke coming out of your lawn mower, then your mower might have trouble starting. When you start the mower, it stalls halfway through cutting.
Self propel won’t propel. When a Honda self-propelled lawn mower does not pull, the belt needs to be replaced, the drive pulley needs to be replaced, and the gear pins need to be replaced.
Keep cutting off. If your Honda HRX217HYA keeps cutting off, the carburetor might be clogged. A clogged carburetor is most commonly caused by leaving fuel in the lawn mower for a long period of time.
Rough running. A clogged carburetor may be causing your mower to run rough. Sticky fuel can clog the carburetor up and make it run rough. A lawnmower may hunt and surge due to a simple airflow problem.
Lawn mower surging. The fuel system may be faulty, which can cause this. Small holes are located throughout the gas tank cap on your mower. Fuel surging can also be caused by water in the fuel tank.

Problems with the Recoil Spring. The recoil spring recoils the starter rope onto a pulley when the starter rope is pulled and released. A broken recoil spring would prevent the rope from recoiling onto the pulley.
Problems with the Rewind Spring. The rewind spring recoils the starter rope onto a pulley when the starter rope is pulled and released. The rope will not rewind onto the pulley if the rewind spring is broken.
