2 1/2 lbs ground beef, cooked and drained
1 small onion, diced
2 tablespoons yellow mustard
2 tablespoons white vinegar
4 tablespoons sugar
3/4 cup tomato juice
1/2 cup tomato ketchup

Steps:

  • In a large fry pan or electric fry pan, mix onion with cooked ground beef.
  • In a bowl or measuring cup, mix together remaining ingredients to make a sauce.
  • Pour sauce over ground beef and onion.
  • Cook on medium-high until heated through, stirring occasionally.
  • You can adjust the amount of tomato juice used depending on how runny or dry you like your sloppy joe.
  • Serve on hamburger rolls or regular bread.

Most people call these Sloppy Joes. From Mary Schafer, 1950. Recipe jealously guarded in times past. This is the stuff we grew up with. Use 90% ground beef or brown and drain the beef first. Serve on hamburger buns with dill pickle chips, a must!

1 teaspoon horseradish
1/2 cup Heinz Chili Sauce
4 small onions, diced (1/2 to 1 cup)
1/2 cup tomato juice
salt (to taste)
black pepper (to taste)
sugar (to taste)

  • Combine all ingredients in a deep skillet and simmer until meat and onions are done.

I love this recipe. It is similar to a sloppy joe. What makes it different is the addition of the veggies, which can be disguised if chopped small enough. I like to make in bulk and freeze in quart bags for OAMC.

2 lbs ground beef, browned (about 5 c. cooked)
1 cup celery, chopped
1 cup carrot, coarsely grated
2 onions, chopped
2 tablespoons vinegar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
2 tablespoons mustard
1 cup catsup
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon chili powder
2 tablespoons flour
2 tablespoons brown sugar, packed

Steps:

  • Combine celery and carrots in a saucepan. Add enough water to cover and cook until tender. Set aside but dont drain water.
  • Brown meat with onions, stirring constantly. Drain if there is a lot of fat.
  • Combine all ingredients including veggies and water together in a large pot. Let mixture simmer for 30 minutes or until most of the water has evaporated.
  • Serve on hamburger buns.

1 medium onion, chopped
1 ½ tablespoons white vinegar
1 ½ tablespoons brown sugar
1 ½ teaspoons prepared yellow mustard
¾ cup ketchup
salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Crumble the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion; cook and stir until meat is no longer pink. Drain excess grease, and stir in the vinegar, brown sugar, mustard, ketchup, salt and pepper. Simmer over medium heat for about 15 minutes. Serve on buns.

1 pound ground beef ((or ground turkey))
½ cup diced onion
1 green pepper (diced)
1 cup barbeque sauce
salt and pepper, to taste
6 Hamburger Buns

Steps:

  • Brown meat in a saucepan over medium heat. After meat is almost cooked through, add onion and pepper and saute for 5 minutes, or until vegetables are soft. Add barbecue sauce and warm on stovetop until heated through. Season with salt and pepper, as desired.
  • Serve on hamburger buns.

1 -1 1/2 lb hamburger
1 small onion, chopped
3/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon cornstarch

Steps:

  • Cook hamburger and onion in saucepan until meat is cooked thoroughly.
  • Dump all other ingredients (except for the cornstarch and water) into pot and stir together.
  • Dissolve cornstarch into water and stir into mixture.
  • Cook until BBQ thickens slightly.
  • Let flavors meld.
