GREBBEL (FRIED DOUGH)
Grebbel is deep-fried dough, something like a doughnut, which is fried and then served with powdered sugar sprinkled on it, while still warm. It is often eaten at breakfast and is very popular during Oktoberfest. This is an untried recipe (for me) but I've eaten these myself in Germany and they are very tasty. Recipe found on the Volga Germans in Portland, Oregon website, from the "Zion Daughter Cookbook", (Portland, Oregon) by Mrs. Peter Klaus. NOTE: Prep time includes 1-hour rise time for dough. GRANDMA KREBEL'S BREAD
My sister submitted this recipe to her church's cookbook. She got it from a close friend of my mother, who, in turn, got it from her mother-in-law. My Mom says its the best, soft white sandwich bread sh'e ever eaten. I haven't tried it yet, but am putting it here for safekeeping.

Steps:
- Put potatoes, salt, yeast, eggs in food process and blend for 15 seconds. Add one cup flour. Mix. Heat oil, water, and milk to 110 to 115°. Add to processor slowly. It may get too full. (I used my blender. You can mix it by hand in a big bowl. Keeping flour on the fingers will help to keep the dough from sticking to them and any surface you are working on.) Turn out on board or bowl to finish blending. Add flour to make soft dough. After well blended turn out on floured surface and knead. Let rise until double. Divide dough and roll to 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Cut using use a donut cutter. Let rise. Deep fat fry. Donuts will rise when they hit the hot grease.
