20 ENGAGING FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE ACTIVITIES FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL KIDS

From teachingexpertise.com
Author Brittany Ray
  • Create a Figurative Language Unit. Creating a unit on figurative language is not easy. So why re-create the wheel? I love this 6th-grade unit on figurative language terms.
  • Make Figures of Speech Flash Cards. Flash cards are always fun to reinforce figurative language (or any other subject). Depending on your class type, there are some tremendous figurative language digital flashcards on Quizlet.
  • Have Students Teach Mini-Lessons. There is no better way to know that kids have learned something than if they teach it to their peers. Separate your students into groups and have each group create a mini-lesson plan on 1-3 figurative language terms.
  • Have a Poetry Unit. Poetry units are an excellent way to teach about figurative language literary elements. This can be done around 2nd grade up through 10th grade.
  • Explore Figurative Language in Popular Music. My students always, without fail, love exploring popular music that they love to discover figurative language truth.

8 CREATIVE FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE ACTIVITIES FOR REVIEW

From prestoplans.com
  • Run a Figurative Language Escape Room. Classroom escape rooms are interactive, attention-holding, and highly-engaging. They are also a great way to review challenging concepts.
  • Introduce Famous Figurative Language. Another fun way to review figures of speech is to have students examine famous quotes that incorporate them. I like to set up stations around the room with different task cards that feature a picture of the famous person, some brief information about who they are, and a quote from that person that uses a type of figurative language.
  • Examine Close Reading Passages. Close reading passages that incorporate figurative language are an excellent way to challenge your students. With close reading, students will need to consciously slow down to properly identify each of the devices weaved into a text, which can be a tricky skill to master.
  • Analyze Text Messages. If you want to get a young person’s attention, speak their language! If it has anything to do with cell phones (pictures, text messages, or social media) you are probably on the right track.
  • Complete Bell-Ringers. If you know me at all, you know I have a slight obsession with bell-ringers. By integrating figurative language instruction into your bell-ringer routine, you can do a quick practice each day.
