Crazy Crust Apple Pie image

No fuss - no crust to roll out and uses canned apple pie filling. Use cherry, blueberry or any other filling as well. Doesn't get much easier than this!

1 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
1 egg
2/3 cup shortening
3/4 cup water
1 (21 ounce) can apple pie filling
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon apple pie spice

Steps:

  • In small mixer bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, egg, shortening and water; blend well and beat two minutes at medium speed.
  • Pour batter into deep 9" pie pan.
  • Combine pie filling, lemon juice and apple pie spice and pour into center of batter.
  • Bake at 425° for 45 to 50 minutes.

1 cup plain flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
113 g butter, softened
3/4 cup milk
1 egg
1 (595 g) can duncan hines country apple pie filling
1/2 cup cinnamon sugar

Steps:

  • preheat oven to 180 Celsius grease a 9 inch pie dish.
  • using an electric mixer, beat the flour, butter, sugar, salt, milk and egg until well combined.
  • pour batter into dish.
  • pour in pie filling, starting in centre and moving to 1 inch away from the edge of the dish.
  • sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. DO NOT STIR ANYTHING.
  • cook for 35 - 40 minutes or until golden on top and a skewer comes out clean.
  • NOTE.you can use any fruity pie filling.

  • Roll out your pie crust according to recipe or package directions and place in your 9" pie plate. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  • Peel and core the apples, then slice into thin slices. I like using my apple peeler for this step. Place one inch of water in the bottom of a large pot. Add apples and cook, stirring occasionally, approximately 3-5 minutes after water boils, or just until the apples start to turn the slightest bit opaque.
  • While apples are cooking, add the crumb ingredients to a large bowl. Using a fork or pastry cutter, cut the ingredients together until they form coarse crumbs, about the size of a pea.
  • Drain apples very well. Let them sit in the strainer for a few minutes to cool, then place them in pie crust. Sprinkle 1/4 cup sugar and cinnamon over apples. Add your crumb mixture evenly on top. Place pie on a cookie sheet to avoid mess in the oven. Cover outer edge of crust with thin strips of foil or a pie crust shield.

  • Heat the 2 tbsp. butter over medium heat in a large skillet. Once melted, add the peeled, sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon and pinch salt. Cook for 3 - 4 minutes, stirring frequently, or until the brown sugar is fully dissolved and the apples have released some moisture.
  • Add the 10 tbsp. of softened butter, 2 tbsp. brown sugar and 2 tbsp. granulated sugar to a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer. Beat with hand beaters or the whip attachment of a stand mixer on medium speed until evenly combined and slightly fluffy, about 1 minute.
  • Pour the batter into a greased 9 inch pie dish, making sure to spread the filling all the way out to the edges. Carefully spoon the apple pie filling into the center of the batter. If the fruit is mounded, gently smooth out the top, but do not stir. Leave 1 inch of batter around the edge of the dish (this is what will form the crust).
