HOT COFFEE GROG RECIPE

Hot Coffee Grog Recipe image

If there's been one simple message that's come out of the Four Loko hullaballoo, it's that mixing caffeine and alcohol is a bad idea. Now that this preliminary is out of the way, let's get down to doing that very thing. There are plenty of versions of the Hot Coffee Grog floating around in the booze world. Some contain cream or butter (or, in one tiki-fied version, coconut cream), and some are laced with a range of liqueurs.

Categories     Rum

Time 1m

Yield 1

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 ounces Demerara rum: Lemon Hart and El Dorado 12 are good choices
4 whole cloves (or 1/4 tsp. ground cloves)
4 to 6 ounces fresh-brewed coffee, to taste
1/4 ounce allspice liqueur (or 1/4 tsp. ground allspice)
2 teaspoon honey or brown sugar
1 cinnamon stick
1/2 ounce Jamaican rum: Appleton Estate Extra is a good choice
long strip of orange zest, for garnish

Steps:

  • In a tall, heatproof glass or mug, dissolve the sugar or honey in a little hot coffee, then add the remaining ingredients. Stir with the cinnamon stick; garnish.

COFFEE GROG, NON ALCOHOLIC

Coffee Grog, Non Alcoholic image

I drink coffee but the less it tastes like coffee the better I like it. This one is perfect for a winters sit by the fireside. Cooking time is however long it takes your coffee pot to brew the coffee. This is really sweet as written, feel free to alter the sugar amount to your own taste. PS. Big mugs are really called for here.

Time 25m

Yield 1 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 12

8 tablespoons salted butter, softened
2 tablespoons dark brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon grated orange zest
1/4 teaspoon grated lemon zest
1 tablespoon spiced sweetened butter
1 1/2 ounces dark rum
3/4 cup very hot strong brewed coffee (sweetened, if desired)
whipped cream
grated orange zest

Steps:

  • Make the butter: in a small bowl, combine all the butter ingredients, beating well with a spoon or stiff spatula to incorporate.
  • Use immediately or place the butter mixture on a sheet of waxed paper and roll it into a log shape about the side of the original stick of butter, twisting the paper together at the ends to smooth out the log; the butter will keep in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  • The grog: put 1 tablespoon Spiced Sweetened Butter in a mug or Irish coffee glass; add the rum and coffee; stir to partially melt the butter.
  • Top with whipped cream and sprinkle with orange zest; serve immediately.
