These colorful bars, with the eye-catching appeal of candied cherries and the crunchy goodness of mixed nuts, are certain to become a holiday favorite year after year. I get lots of compliments on the rich, chewy crust and the combination of sweet and salty flavors.

Number Of Ingredients 8

1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2/3 cup packed brown sugar, divided
3/4 cup cold butter, cubed
1 large egg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1-1/2 cups mixed nuts
1-1/2 cups green and red candied cherries, halved
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, mix flour and 1/3 cup brown sugar; cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press into a lightly greased 13x9-in. baking pan. Bake 15 minutes. , In a large bowl, whisk together egg and salt; stir in remaining brown sugar. Stir in nuts, cherries and chocolate chips. Spoon evenly over crust., Bake until topping is set, 20-25 minutes. Cool completely on a wire rack. Cut into bars.

1 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup sugar
2 cups flour
1 (225 g) package chipits skor toffee pieces
3/4 cup corn syrup
1 cup sliced almonds, divided
3/4 cup flaked coconut, divided

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F Grease sides of 9x13-inch pan. In large mixing bowl, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Gradually add flour beating until well blended. Press dough into bottom of prepared pan. bake 15-20 minutes or until lightly browned along the edges.
  • Meanwhile in medium saucepan, stir together toffee bits and corn syrup. Cook over medium heat stirring constantly until toffee is melted, about 12 minutes. Stir in 1/2 cup almonds and 1/2 cup coconut. Spread within 1/4 inch of crust edge. Sprinkle remaining almonds and coconut over top. Bake an additional 15 minutes or until bubbly.
  • Cool completely in pan on wire rack.

Number Of Ingredients 14

1 cup butter, softened (or use half butter and half margarine)
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup brown sugar, divided
1 tablespoon water
1 tablespoon maple extract
2 egg yolks
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon (optional or to taste)
2 egg whites, room temperature
1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup chopped walnuts (can use more or less) or 1 cup pecans (can use more or less)

Steps:

  • Set oven to 350 degrees.
  • Grease a 13 x 9-inch baking dish.
  • In a bowl cream together butter with sugar and 1/2 cup brown sugar until light and fluffy (about 4 minutes).
  • Add in water, maple extract and 2 egg yolks (reserve the whites in another bowl) beat for 2-3 minutes.
  • Mix together the flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder and cinnamon (if using) then add to the creamed mixture; mix until combined.
  • Spread the batter into the prepared baking dish.
  • Sprinkle the chocolate chips on top of the batter.
  • Beat the egg whites until soft peaks form, then add in in 1/2 cup brown sugar; blend well.
  • Spread the egg white mixture over the top of the chocolate chips.
  • Sprinkle the top with chopped nuts.
  • Bake for about 35 minutes or until the meringue is light brown.
  • Cut the bars while still hot.

1/2 cup blue bonnet margarine (or butter)
2 cups firmly-packed brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups unsifted all-purpose flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 cup (6-oz pkg) Chipits semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 cup coarsely-chopped nuts (opt)

Steps:

  • Melt margarine in a large saucepan. Remove from heat. Add sugar and vanilla and stir until well blended. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir together flour, baking powder and salt. Add to saucepan and mix well. Spread in a greased 9 X 13 X 2-inch rectangular baking pan. Sprinkle chipits and nuts over surface of cookie mixture; press down lightly. Bake in a preheated 350 degree F oven 35 to 40 minutes. Cool. Cut into bars.
