Easy Bananas Flambé image

Rum is flamed to finish the banana dessert dish known as bananas flambé. It's a popular dish in the French Caribbean and inspired Bananas Foster.

2 bananas
2 tablespoons sunflower oil
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup white rum
Juice from 1 lime
Vanilla ice cream, optional, for serving

Steps:

  • Gather the ingredients.
  • Peel and halve each banana lengthwise.
  • Heat the oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
  • Brown the bananas 5 minutes on each side.
  • Add the sugar and pour in the rum.
  • Cook for 2 minutes.
  • Flambé.
  • Sprinkle with lime juice and serve at once with vanilla ice cream, if desired.

1 tablespoon lemon, rind of
1 tablespoon orange rind
1 tablespoon lemon juice
3 tablespoons orange juice
3 cups bananas, chunks
3 teaspoons liquid egg substitute, mixed with water
4 tablespoons water
1/3 cup brown sugar
3 tablespoons pineapple juice
1 cup soymilk
1 cup breadcrumbs
2 tablespoons soy margarine, melted and cooled

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 300°F, and oil a 1½ quart mould.
  • Combine peels and juices with banana chunks and set aside.
  • Place egg substitute mixture, sugar and pineapple juice in a food processor and pulse until blended.
  • Add soy milk and bread crumbs and pulse a few more times.
  • Spoon the mixture over banana mixture.
  • Add margarine, mix well and pour into prepared mould.
  • Place mould in a large pan and pour in enough boiling water to reach halfway up the sides of the mould.
  • Bake 1 hour 20 minutes, a knife inserted should come out clean.
  • You may have to add more boiling water during the cooking time.
  • Cool 20 to 30 minutes and then remove from the mould.
  • Refrigerate 2 hours before serving.

4 medium bananas
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup fresh-squeezed orange juice
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, freshly grated
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup sherry wine
1 tablespoon butter
2 tablespoons light rum (coconut rum would probably be good here, too)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.
  • Peel the bananas, split them in half lengthwise, then place them in a buttered baking dish (10"x6"x2").
  • Combine the sugar, orange juice, nutmeg, cinnamon and sherry in a saucepan. Heat until sugar is dissolved, then pour over the bananas. Dot with butter.
  • Bake bananas for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the bananas are tender. Baste them once or twice during baking.
  • Remove from oven. Sprinkle with the rum before serving.
  • Serve as-is, or with a scoop of vanilla or coconut ice cream.

  • You'll be dealing with a flame, so take precautions in case something doesn't go as planned! If you have long hair, tie it back. Have a lid for your skillet or a box of baking soda ready by the stove to extinguish a flame if you need to.
  • Over LOW to MEDIUM heat, melt butter. Add sugar, a squeeze of lemon juice and cinnamon. Stir to combine.
  • When smooth and beginning to bubble, add bananas. Cook on one side for 1 minute, then turn carefully with tongs and cook on the other side for 1 minute.
