COUNTRY GRAVY

Country gravy, also called sawmill gravy or white gravy, is a staple of hearty Southern cooking. It can be used as a creamy blanket for chicken fried steak or to accompany a plate of freshly baked biscuits at breakfast time. This recipe is a down-home classic that takes just 15 minutes to pull together.

Time 15m

Yield 2 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 1/2 cups Bisquick Heart Smart mix
1/2 cup soymilk
2 teaspoons earth balance butter
2 tablespoons onions, diced
1 tablespoon flour
1 cup water, warmed
1 teaspoon better than bullion vegetable stock base
garlic powder
fresh ground black pepper
Braggs liquid aminos, amino acid
1 tablespoon cornstarch

Steps:

  • First make your biscuits by combining the bisquick mix and soymilk. Cook in a 450 degree oven for 8 minutes.
  • Melt butter, and cook onion until translucent.
  • While onion is cooking, dissolve your vegetable base in water, add garlic powder, black pepper and braggs amino acid. (I didn't measure the braggs, just poured some in to taste). Set aside.

  • Pour gravy over biscuits and enjoy!

BISCUITS AND GRAVY ROLLS

Biscuits and Gravy Rolls image

While this biscuit and gravy recipe might at first seem pretty standard, there's a delicious secret hiding between the flaky layers of these warm, fluffy biscuits. We put a delightful twist on what you know as classic biscuits and gravy by sprinkling cooked ground sausage into the Bisquick™ biscuit dough before baking. Not only do you get to enjoy the taste of flavorful sausage in every bite, but the traditional sawmill gravy that gets drizzled over the biscuits is one of the best thick and creamy homemade gravy recipes you'll ever meet. Top it off by grinding a bit of black pepper over your meal before serving for the final finishing touch. Fair warning-our homemade biscuits and gravy tend to go fast, so don't be surprised if you have to make double.

Time 45m

Yield 12

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 lb ground pork sausage
2 1/2 cups Original Bisquick™ mix
2/3 cup milk
1 tablespoon sugar
Salt and pepper, to taste
4 tablespoons pork sausage drippings (or butter)
3 tablespoons Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
2 cups milk

Steps:

  • In 8-inch skillet, crumble and cook pork sausage over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until no longer pink. Drain, reserving drippings.
  • Heat oven to 375°F. Lightly grease or spray 13x9-inch pan.
  • In large bowl, stir Bisquick mix, milk and sugar until dough forms. Place dough on surface lightly sprinkled with Bisquick mix; knead until smooth, about 10 turns. Roll out dough to 15x9-inch rectangle. Spread crumbled sausage on rectangle. Roll up dough tightly from one long side; pinch seam to seal. Cut roll into 12 equal slices. Place cut side down in pan.
  • Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Meanwhile, return sausage drippings to skillet over medium heat (add butter as needed to make 4 tablespoons total). Add flour; beat with whisk. Slowly add milk, beating constantly. Cook about 5 minutes or until thickened.
  • Transfer rolls to serving plates. Spoon gravy over tops; sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.

OLD TIME KENTUCKY BACON MILK GRAVY FOR BISCUITS

Old Time Kentucky Bacon Milk Gravy for Biscuits image

I grew up with this gravy! Everyone has heard of sausage gravy. Well, it don't compare to this! After frying your bacon for breakfast, use the bacon dripping to make true Kentucky biscuit gravy. Fattening? Oh yeah, you better believe it! Worth it? Yes! Pour over biscuits and serve with crispy bacon and eggs in any style.

Time 35m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 5

¼ cup bacon drippings
¼ cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
1 teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
4 cups milk, divided

Steps:

  • Heat bacon drippings in a skillet over medium heat; whisk flour into drippings until smooth. Reduce heat to low and cook the flour mixture until it turns a caramel brown color, stirring constantly, about 15 minutes. Be careful, the roux burns easily. Stir in salt and black pepper.
  • Whisk 1/2 cup milk into the roux until thoroughly blended. Continue whisking milk into the gravy, 1/2 cup at a time, whisking in each amount of milk completely before adding more. Bring gravy to a simmer and whisk constantly until thick, smooth, and bubbling.
