RANKING THE ROGUE 5E ARCHETYPES | ROGUE 5E SUBCLASSES …

Estimated Reading Time 6 mins
- Swashbuckler. The swashbuckler sits at the top of our Rogue 5E archetypes list. This subclass might not be most people’s vision of a rogue, but the subclass traits are outstanding.
- Soulknife. The Soulknife is a psionics-based archetype released in Tasha’s cauldron of Everything. It is one of the better psionic options, in my opinion.
- Thief. Most classes have a “vanilla” subclass that offers little outside of amplifying that classes natural strengths. For the rogue, that subclass is the thief.
- Assassin. It should come as no surprise that the Assassin excels at sneaking around and killing. This subclass gives you more than that, though. You gain useful bonus proficiencies off the bat.
- Arcane Trickster. The Arcane Trickster is a good option, and it is unique given that it is the only rogue subclass that can use magic. the subclass uses a lot of illusion and enchantment magic, which fits thematically.
- Phantom. The Phantom is one of two roguish archetypes released with Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. This archetype is based around the concept of a rogue that draws power from death itself.
- Scout. First released in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything, the scout is essentially the merger between ranger and rogue. In some ways, it can out-ranger the ranger.
- Mastermind. Although near the bottom of our list, there are certain players and campaigns where the Mastermind can shine. It is a fun concept built on intrigue and the social interactions within the game.
- Inquisitive. The Inquisitive Rogue is firmly in last place in our subclass rankings. The concept of this archetype is enhanced insight and perception above and beyond a rogue’s natural strength.

- 15 Crossbow Expert. Player's Handbook pg. 165. Rogues can use any number of weapons, but they're best associated with the crossbow. Most rogues can use a crossbow just fine, but the Crossbow Expert feat can make them a force to be reckoned with.
- 15 Sharpshooter. Player's Handbook pg. 170. Rogues don't need to be within five feet of a target to deal a lot of damage. As long as a rogue has advantage on their attack or an ally is within five feet of their target, a rogue gains Sneak Attack damage.
- 15 Shadow Touched. Tasha's Cauldron Of Everything pg. 80 Several feats give characters access to spells. The best feat for a rogue who wants to cast spells in D&D 5e is unquestionable Shadow Touched.
- 15 Dungeon Delver. Player's Handbook pg. 166. Rogues are natural thieves. They gain immediate proficiency in Thieves' Tools and have abilities that tend towards stealth and underhand means.
- 15 Fey Touched. Tasha's Cauldron Of Everything pg. 79 Only the Arcane Trickster subclass gets spellcasting naturally as a rogue. Most use mundane means to get ahead.
- 15 Alert. Player's Handbook pg. 165. Surprise is powerful in Dungeons & Dragons. In particular, it can be devastating for a rogue to be Surprised. Rogues operate at their best when they can get into a good position and start combat on their terms.
- 15 Mobile. Player's Handbook pg. 168. The Mobile feat is perfect for rogues wanting to safely enter the middle of a battlefield. Rogues usually have fewer hit points than fighters or barbarians, so avoiding damage is always a priority.
- 15 Piercer. Tasha's Cauldron of Everything pg. 80 Most weapons commonly used by rogues – like rapiers, shortswords, daggers, or crossbows – deal piercing damage.
- 15 Skulker. Player's Handbook pg. 170. Skulker is the perfect feat for rogues who enjoy traversing inside the shadows in and out of combat. Dim light no longer imposes disadvantage on Perception checks relying on sight with the feat.
- 15 Fighting Initiate. Tasha's Cauldron of Everything pg. 80 Rogues are similar to many of 5e's martial classes, but they lack Fighting Styles to represent their lesser combat focus.
TOP 10 5E D&D HOMEBREW ROGUISH ARCHETYPES BY A …
From nerdarchy.com
- Two Goblins In a Trench Coat. The party is certainly shocked to find out that the normal sized humanoid they thought that they knew was in fact, two goblins in a trench coat.
- Alchemist. As an alchemist you mix and match different substances to create harmful or helpful potions. I love this concept. Alchemy works much better as skill and knowledge based than through magic for my taste and this includes a big ol’ Chemistry table for concoctions.
- Blademaster. You train yourself in the art of open combat. Boring and falls into the same trap I see constantly anywhere there’s space to share homebrew — it’s all self-buffing combat features.
- Bruiser. While most rogues rely on skill and precision, you embody the brutal nature of their murky world and have subsequently honed your hardiness and physical clout—what you lack in grace, you more than make up for in thuggish resilience.
- Mist Walker. You have spent your life hiding in the mists. For starters one of the features is superfluous so off to a bad start. It goes on to incorporate basically unlimited 3rd and 5th level spells.
- Adrenaline Junkie. Thrills. You love ’em, you seek ’em, you thrive on them. I like the concept but a kludgy subsystem and almost completely self-centered features (there’s a single option from a subsystem menu doing anything besides buffing the individual) make it too messy for me.
- Gadgeteer. In a world of magic, technology is pursued by a rare number of people. Gadgeteers are among those with an innate affinity for mechanical devices and technological innovation.
- Assassin Variant: Master of Shadows. As a master of shadows you take a specialized approach to your craft. I feel like a broken record at this point. Features to only benefit the individual are lame.
- Outlaw. While the majority or the world thinks of rogues as sneaky thieves who use poison and stealth to do their dirty work, Outlaws prefer wetwork. Make firearms and make yourself more deadly with them.
- Sniper. As a Sniper you are gifted at ranged combat, picking out an enemies weak points and attacking with deadly accuracy and power. Before I look beyond the name I’ll take a guess.
