10 WAYS TO STOP DRAUGHTS FROM DOORS - IDEAL HOME
10-ways-to-stop-draughts-from-doors-ideal-home image

From idealhome.co.uk
Author Rhoda Parry
  • Fit a door brush strip draught excluder to stop draughts from doors. The space at the bottom of a door, where it runs over the carpet or other hallway flooring ideas, is the main culprit for draughts. ‘
  • Install a hinged flap to the bottom of the door. Another for how to keep your house warm in winter and summer is to install a hinged flap design (sometimes called a weather bar) and eliminate draughts and at the bottom of your door.
  • Add draught strips around the edge of the door. The bottom of the door isn’t the only area where draughts can come in. The edges and top should also be properly sealed to stop heat from leaking out and cold air from entering your home.
  • Invest in an efficient letterbox flap. Is your letterbox letting in unwanted draughts? An energy-efficient letterbox will have brushes and a flap that work together to stop air from blowing through into your home – and heat from escaping out.
  • Buy a soft pillow draught excluder to stop draughts from doors. A more traditional method for blocking out draughts is to lay a long soft cushion or bolster on the floor, directly in front of the door.
  • Make your own draught excluder. With a bit of creativity, you’ve probably got the materials in your house already to make a draught excluder. You could fashion your own soft cushioned design to put in front of the door – the Energy Saving Trust recommends stuffing a case with used plastic bags, spare bits of fabric or similar material, which will work well as a thermal barrier.
  • Cover the keyhole to stop draughts from doors. A bit like your letterbox, the keyhole is a small but disproportionately leaky gap in your door that could be letting in unwanted cold air.
  • Upgrade door glass. Glass is the main culprit when it comes to bad thermal efficiency in homes. Lots of doors have glazed panels. If the glass is broken, then it’s important to replace front door glass.
  • Keep internal doors closed to stop draughts from doors. It might sound obvious, but shutting the internal doors between your external door and living spaces will do wonders in helping to keep spaces warm.
  • Buy a new door with efficient weather seals. If you’ve exhausted all the above options and nothing seems to be fixing the draughts, it’s probably time to invest in a replacement door.

8 BEST FILLINGS FOR A DRAUGHT EXCLUDER - CRAFTY SEWING SEW

From craftysewingsew.co.uk
  • Rice. Weird as it may sound. Rice is actually a great stuffer for a DIY draught excluder. It’s all about making sure the item carries weight, and rice can add to that weight.
  • Old Worn Out Clothes. This should be the most effortless filling for a DIY draught excluder. Everyone should have a pair of old worn-out clothes in their wardrobe.
  • Sand. Sand can work as a good filling for your draught excluder. Coupled with some fibres for a softer feel, it can help prevent cold draught. Just stuff it up in an old pair of tights before putting it into your cover.
  • Polyester Fibres. Polyester fibres are excellent stuffing materials. They are often used to stuff teddy bears, dolls, pillows, and many other things. They are easy to access, and you can get them in almost every craft shop.
  • Dried Lentils Or Beans. Dried lentils and beans are another great draught excluder filling though they may not always work out the cheapest. You can however buy larger quantities in the World food aisles in supermarkets.
  • Foam Peanuts. Foam peanuts are those unfortunately annoying things that often come in packages to prevent damage and you do everything you can to keep them from spreading around the house.
  • Bean Bag Balls. While bean bag balls or bean bag filling isn’t the cheapest on the list it is a great alternative to some of the others on the list. Bean bag filling is great to work with and is easy to use, the only downside is that if they are spilled out it can be quite messy and hard to clean up.
  • Un-Used Cat Litter. While I haven’t actually tested this theory myself it is highly recommended by fellow bloggers and crafters everywhere. It is cheaper than some of the alternative materials and can be used in small amounts.
