SWEET ONION BBQ BURGERS
Sometimes we don't even bother with a bun for these moist, flavorful onion burgers. Smoked cheese, grilled onions and a special sauce make them out of the ordinary! -Christie Gardiner, Pleasant Grove, Utah

- In a large bowl, combine the bread crumbs, onion salt and brown sugar. Add egg. Crumble beef over mixture and mix well. Shape into four patties. Place in a shallow dish; pour barbecue sauce over patties. Cover and refrigerate for 2-4 hours. , In a small bowl, combine the sauce ingredients; cover and refrigerate until serving. For topping, melt butter in a small skillet. Stir in honey until blended. Add onions; saute for 15-20 minutes or until tender and lightly browned. Remove from the heat and keep warm. , Drain and discard barbecue sauce. Grill patties, uncovered, over medium heat or broil 4 in. from the heat for 5-7 minutes on each side or until a thermometer reads 160° and juices run clear. Top each with a cheese slice; cook 1 minute longer or until cheese is melted. Serve on buns with sauce and onion topping.

Steps:
- For onions, tear a large piece (36x18-inches) of heavy duty foil.
- Fold in half to make a double thickness of foil (18x18-inches).
- Place onions in the center of the foil.
- Combine the melted butter, mustard and honey; drizzle over onions.
- Bring up two opposite ends of foil and seal with a double fold.
- Then fold the remaining ends to completely enclose the onion mixture.
- leaving space for steam to build.
- Place packet on an uncovered grill directly over medium heat for 15 minutes.
- Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper; mix well.
- Shape into 6 patties.
- Add patties to grill.
- Grill patties and onions for 5 minutes.
- Turn patties and grill for 8 to 10 minutes more or until no pink remains and the onions are tender.
- To serve: lightly toast hamburger buns or rolls on grill.
- Top with desired condiments, then add lettuce leaf, tomato slice, burger, grilled onions and top bun.
- Yield: 6 servings.

- Warm oil over medium-high in a medium nonstick skillet. Saute onion until soft and starting to caramelize, about 6 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool a bit.
- In a large bowl, thoroughly combine beef, barbecue sauce, and cheese. Add in the cooked onions; season with salt and pepper. Don't over-mix.
- Divide mixture into 4 equal patties 3/4-inch thick. With your thumb, gently make a slight indentation in the center of each patty (this will help them from puffing up during cooking.) Transfer to a plate and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Fire up an outdoor grill to medium-high heat. Spray grill grates thoroughly. For medium doneness (145°F), grill for 3 minutes, flip, grill for 5 more minutes. Grill the onion slices at the same time, keeping an eye on them so they don’t burn. Remove burgers and onions and allow to rest. Toast the buns on the grill for 30-60 seconds.
