After tasting the pure apple flavor of this homemade sauce, you just might never go back to the store-bought kind. Supermarket applesauce can be loaded with added sweeteners and flavorings. We use only a little sugar, plus lemon juice, salt and cinnamon, providing a balanced flavor and the perfect amount of sweetness.

4 pounds assorted apples, such as Golden Delicious, Gala, Honeycrisp or McIntosh (about 8), peeled, cored and chopped
1/4 cup sugar
Kosher salt
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Combine the apples, sugar, 1 cup water and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a large pot. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and cook until the apples are very soft, 18 to 20 minutes.
  • Stir in the lemon juice and cinnamon. Let cool for 5 minutes or so, then transfer the apple mixture to a blender, filling no more than halfway. Remove the center cap from the lid and place it on the blender. Cover the lid with a folded kitchen towel to catch splatters and pulse until smooth. Alternatively, puree in the pan with an immersion blender.
  • Transfer the applesauce to a bowl and refrigerate until cool, about 1 hour. Store leftover applesauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

Golden delicious apples are transformed in just 45 minutes into sweet and cinnamony homemade applesauce. Serve it chilled on its own or as a warm side dish.

7 Golden Delicious apples, peeled, chopped
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup packed dark brown sugar
1 cup water
3 slices lemon peel (cut with a vegetable peeler or paring knife)
2 cinnamon sticks (3 inch)

Steps:

  • In 6-quart stockpot or Dutch oven, place all ingredients. Heat to boiling, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to low; cook uncovered 30 to 40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until apples are tender.
  • Remove from heat; discard lemon peel and cinnamon sticks. Let apple mixture cool slightly, about 10 minutes; puree in a food processor, blender, or mash with a potato masher. Serve warm or cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

8 medium apples, peeled and cubed
1 medium ripe banana, thinly sliced
1 cup raisins
3/4 cup orange juice
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup butter, melted
2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
1 small lemon
1 envelope instant apples and cinnamon oatmeal
1/2 cup boiling water
Dried banana chips, optional

Steps:

  • Place the apples, banana and raisins in a 3-qt. slow cooker coated with cooking spray. In a small bowl, combine the orange juice, brown sugar, honey, butter and pie spice; pour over apple mixture. Cut ends off lemon. Cut into 6 wedges and remove seeds. Transfer to slow cooker. Cover and cook on high for 3-4 hours or until apples are soft. , Discard lemon. Mash apple mixture. In a small bowl, combine oatmeal and water. Let stand for 1 minute. Stir into applesauce. If desired, top with dried banana chips.

Steps:

  • Mix water and corn starch together until corn starch is dissolved. In skillet, pour water/corn starch, lemon juice, honey, vanilla, and cinnamon. Turn skillet on medium until sauce begins to warm and blend. Add chopped apples and bananas and stir to coat with the sauce. Continue to cook over low heat for 5-7 minutes. Scoop apple/ bananas into a bowl or hollowed out apples.

Cinnamon with apple pie is as American as the pie itself. When my mom makes an apple pie or cobbler, this sauce is like the ice cream--you're SUPPOSED to have this with it at my house. My pop can take it or leave it, but if I had to choose the ice cream or this, buh-bye ice cream!! I can eat this with a spoon, straight from the saucepot. Did I mention I'm a sauce freak?? LOL! Sometimes, I make it just to eat and I always have everything on hand. It's also good on vanilla ice cream, but I prefer the pie. I have been known to request this just because. 1 tablespoon butter or 1 tablespoon margarine
1 tablespoon flour
1/8 teaspoon vanilla
cinnamon, to taste

Steps:

2-4 tbsp caster or light brown soft sugar (depending on the sweetness of the apples)
1 tbsp lemon juice
½ tsp ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Put the apples, sugar, lemon juice and cinnamon in a small pan with 1 tbsp water. Cover and cook over a medium heat for 5-10 mins, or until the apples are tender when pierced with the tip of a knife.
  • If you prefer a smoother mixture, continue to cook for a further 5 mins, uncovered, stirring frequently to break down the apples into a compote.
