Originally printed in 1796, Amelia Simmons' supplied the first recorded cookie recipe in Amercica. The recipe is as it originally appeared other than conversions into more modern measurements.

Steps:
- Preheat oven to 375.
- Cream butter until soft; add sugar gradually and cream until fluffy (about 5 minutes).
- Sift flour, baking powder and salt; add coriander.
- Combine milk and sour cream.
- Add the dry mixture to the butter-sugar mixture alternately with the milk, beating after each addition.
- Pinch off pieces about the size of a hazlenut. Roll in balls, place about 2 1/2 inches apart on greased cookie sheets. Flatten in circles (using the bottom of a glass dipped on flour). Bake about 12 minutes or until the edges begin to brown. Cookies may be sprinkled with cinnamon, sugar, chopped nuts, or colored sugar before baking.

Steps:
- Cream butter. Add sugar, creaming well. Beat in egg and vanilla. Combine flour and baking powder; gradually add to creamed mixture.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut into 2 inch rounds, and place on ungreased baking sheets.
- Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 10 minutes, or until very lightly browned at edges. Cool thoroughly.
- Spread half of the cookies with jam, and top with remaining cookies.
- Combine confectioners' sugar, almond extract, and enough hot water to make a thin icing. Frost tops of cookies. Top each with a small piece of candied cherry.

- Thoroughly cream sugars, margarine, oil, egg, milk and vanilla.
- Add dry ingredients, nuts and chocolate chips.
- Drop by teaspoon onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 8-12 minutes. (Cookies are light in color when done.)
