Turkey Chili image

This flavorful Turkey Chili recipe will satisfy even the heartiest of appetites. It's packed with lean ground turkey, three kinds of beans, and a variety of Mexican spices. Serve it with the toppings of your choice for a delicious, comforting meal.

2 pounds 93% lean ground turkey
28 ounce can crushed tomatoes
15 ounce can tomato sauce
15 ounce can kidney beans (rinsed and drained)
15 ounce can pinto beans (rinsed and drained)
15 ounce can black beans ( rinsed and drained)
½ cup diced yellow onion
1 tablespoon minced garlic
¼ cup red wine (like cabernet sauvignon or pinot noir)
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1 teaspoon dried oregano
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (or to taste (optional))
2 dried bay leaves
cheese, sour cream, cilantro, bell pepper, tomato

Steps:

  • Coat the bottom of a large pot or Dutch oven with nonstick cooking spray and place over MEDIUM heat. Add the ground turkey and cook, stirring to break up the meat, for about 5 minutes or until fully cooked. Drain off any excess grease and return the pot to the heat.
  • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, kidney beans, pinto beans, black beans, onion, garlic, and red wine. Season with the chili powder, cumin, parsley, oregano, black pepper, red pepper flakes, and bay leaves.
  • Bring the chili to a simmer over MEDIUM-HIGH heat, then reduce the heat to LOW, cover, and simmer for 1 ½ to 2 hours. Stir the chili occasionally as it simmers.
  • Remove and discard bay leaves before serving.
  • Coat a large skillet with nonstick cooking spray and place it over MEDIUM heat. Add the ground turkey and cook, stirring to break up the meat, for about 5 minutes or until fully cooked. Drain off any excess grease and transfer the ground turkey to a 6-quart slow cooker. Add the remaining ingredients, as directed.
  • Cover and cook on LOW heat for 4 to 6 hours. Remove and discard the bay leaves before serving.

This is so easy and so tasty. Freezes great for meals later in the week. If you want it a little thinner add an extra can of tomato sauce. Also the green chiles are not hot but add a wonderful flavor, so don't be afraid of them.

1 (20 ounce) package 93%-lean ground turkey
1 (28 ounce) can diced fire-roasted tomatoes
1 (16 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 (15.5 ounce) can pinto beans, rinsed and drained
1 (15.5 ounce) can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
1 (15 ounce) can reduced-sodium black beans, rinsed and drained
1 small onion, chopped
1 (4.5 ounce) can chopped green chiles
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 teaspoon oregano
1 pinch ground cumin

Steps:

  • Cook and stir turkey in a large skillet until completely browned, 7 to 10 minutes; transfer to slow cooker.
  • Stir tomatoes, tomato sauce, pinto beans, kidney beans, black beans, onion, green chilies, chili powder, garlic, oregano, and cumin with the turkey in the slow cooker.
  • Cook on High for 4 hours or on Low for 7 hours.

I am not a chili person but even I enjoy this version. Don't be frightened by the number of ingredients, they are mostly common seasonings.

2 lbs ground turkey
1 lb sweet Italian sausage (turkey or pork is fine)
1 (15 ounce) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
1 (15 ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed
1 (15 ounce) can chili beans, in zesty sauce
2 (28 ounce) cans diced tomatoes with juice
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
1 large onion, diced
1 stalk celery, diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 red bell pepper, diced
1 (7 ounce) can diced green chilies
4 chicken bouillon cubes
6 -8 ounces beer (I used something very hoppy such as Sam Adams Boston Lager)
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
3 -4 garlic cloves, minced
1 tablespoon dried oregano
2 teaspoons ground cumin
2 teaspoons hot pepper sauce
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon honey
corn chips (to garnish)
cheese (to garnish)

Steps:

  • Brown ground turkey and sausage. Drain grease.
  • Add the rest of the ingredients EXCEPT the corn chips and cheese. Stir everything together then reduce heat and cover. Simmer over low heat for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  • After two hours, taste and adjust seasonings. This recipe is not very spicy, if you would like spicier, add more cayenne, chili powder and hot pepper sauce. The longer this chili simmers, the better it tastes.
  • Serve with corn chips and cheese.

This recipe from "Slow Cooker Recipes for All Occasions" is a good starting point for a great pot of chili. You may, as I did, substitute ground chicken for the turkey, and add whatever other seasonings you like - I myself added some garlic, cumin and oregano, which took this dish up an extra level.

28 ounces diced tomatoes, undrained
15 ounces chickpeas, rinsed and drained
15 ounces red kidney beans, rinsed and drained
15 ounces black beans, rinsed and drained
8 ounces tomato sauce
4 ounces mild green chilies, chopped
2 tablespoons chili powder

Steps:

  • Cook and stir the turkey and onion in a medium skillet over medium-high heat until the turkey is no longer pink.
  • Drain and discard the fat.
  • Transfer to the slow cooker.
  • Add the remaining ingredients and mix well.
  • Cover and cook on high for 6 to 8 hours or until done.
